The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Program
(UDP) Nigeria has reaffirmed their joint commitment to progress democratic governance throughout West Africa through the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD) partnership, a strategic initiative aimed at promoting inclusive, responsible and iresilient political systems through sober.
During a high -level commitment held at the Ministry headquarters in Abuja, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, hosted the UDP
Resident representative, Mrs. Elsie Attrafuah, for a revision of progress and a strategic dialogue
on the RPD initiative.
The commitment reiterated a strong collective commitment to deepen democratic governance and institutional resilience through all western Africa. He underlined the importance of strengthening the state of law, safeguarding the independence and effectiveness of basic democratic institutions, including the executive, the legislator, the judiciary and the electoral bodies and the expansion of the civil space to encourage inclusive and participatory governance. This creates an opportunity for regional cooperation to consolidate democratic progress, promote peace and stability and satisfy citizens’ aspirations for a transparent, responsible and reactive
Leadership.
Tuggar underlined the role of unique leadership of Nigeria within the African Union
(AU) in guiding the regional approaches to the governance reform. He highlighted the determination of the Ministry to work closely with the UDP and other key actors to align national strategies with regional paintings to encourage more transparent, inclusive and sustainable democratic results.
The regional partnership for democracy (RPD) tries to provide a platform for African and specific solutions for the context of democratic challenges. He brings together governments, civil society, academy, media and development partners to design and implement innovative reforms rooted in African values โโand democratic principles.
The UDP reiterated its support for the RPD through the supply of technical assistance, strengthening of institutional ability, political development consisting of research and monitoring
and evaluation. Mrs. Attrafuah reiterated the dedication of the UNDP to work in collaboration with the Nigerian government to climb the impact of the initiative throughout West Africa.
The program will be piloted throughout West Africa, with Nigeria not only that it provides political leadership, but will also play a central operational role in modeling the processes of design, implementation and sharing of knowledge.
This renewed partnership represents a significant step forward in the implementation phase of the RPD and reflects the prolonged commitment of Nigeria to promote democratic resilience, the rule of law and the inclusive government throughout the soberness of West Africa.
