Nigerian boxing stars Tunde Segun “War” Adeyemi and Ayisat Oriyomi were set to showcase their skills on an international stage this Saturday, August 3 in France.
Scheduled to face French opponents Bakare Diallo and Clothilde Del Ben respectively, the highly-anticipated event at the Stade Coubertin in Garges-les-Gonesse, Val-d’Oise, has been postponed due to unforeseen delays in visa processing amid the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Adeyemi, the undefeated WABU Super Lightweight Champion with a record of 11-0-1 (7 KOs), was eager to continue his impressive winning streak. Known for his aggressive style and knockout power, Adeyemi quickly made a name for himself in the Super Lightweight division.
“This fight was an important step in my career. I was eager to prove myself at the international level and represent Nigeria with pride,” he said.
Similarly, Ayisat Oriyomi, the national flyweight champion with an unblemished record of 6-0-0 (4 KO), was ready to test her mettle against Clothilde Del Ben. Oriyomi has been a dominant force in the ring, her quick movements and powerful punches earning her a reputation as a rising star in women’s boxing.
“Fighting in France was a dream come true. I have trained hard for this moment and I am disappointed that it has been delayed, but I remain focused and ready for when the opportunity arises,” Oriyomi said.
Event organisers expressed regret at the postponement but stressed the importance of ensuring all logistical details are in place, particularly given the increased demands on immigration and travel services during the Olympic Games.
“The Paris 2024 Olympic Games have placed additional pressure on visa processing and other logistics of international travel. We are working diligently to reschedule the event as soon as possible,” a spokesperson said.
Despite the setback, both Nigerian champions remain optimistic. Adeyemi and Oriyomi continue with their rigorous training routines, preparing for when the fight is rescheduled. Their determination reflects their commitment to their sport and their country, and both athletes expressed gratitude for the support of their fans.
“We are ready and we will be even stronger when the time comes,” Adeyemi said, a sentiment echoed by Oriyomi. “Our journey does not end here; it is just a temporary pause.”
As fans eagerly await a new date for the international competition, the resilience and dedication of these Nigerian champions continue to inspire, displaying the spirit of perseverance in the face of unexpected challenges.
