Nigerian government claims no more need to plan hunger protests

The Federal Government has announced that the national hunger protests planned for August 1-10, 2024, are now unnecessary.

Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, made this statement while speaking to State House reporters after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday, chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

Idris stressed that the government has responded to the issues raised by Nigerians and is actively working to ensure food availability. He said, β€œMany of the issues raised by those planning the protest are being addressed. The government is working to ensure food availability.”

He outlined the government’s actions, noting, β€œRice has been taken to various centers across the country, and is being sold at N40,000. This is just the beginning and the first step that is needed. Other efforts are underway.”

The minister also highlighted ongoing investments in the agricultural sector, and expressed optimism that food prices would come down over time. “There is so much investment going into the agricultural sector and we are confident that over time, food prices will come down,” he added.

Idris assured that President Tinubu is committed to addressing the issues of the youth, citing ongoing initiatives such as the student loan programme and the CNG transport scheme. β€œThe student loan ensures that no young person who wants to go to school is left behind. When CNG takes full action, the transport issue will be resolved,” he concluded.
