Nigerian Students Win Stunning Cambridge Prizes

Six students from three secondary schools in Nigeria have received Top in the World Outstanding Cambridge Learners awards for the June and November 2023 Cambridge exam series.

This was announced by the British Council Nigeria Country Director, Mrs Lucy Pearson, at the British Council Recognition and Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards ceremony held in Lagos on Thursday evening.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the British Council, in collaboration with Cambridge International Examinations, has recognised the outstanding achievements of students from various British Council partner schools in Nigeria.

Pearson said the awards were given to students who achieved the highest scores globally in the English as a Second Language (speaking) qualification.

The National Director said that two Nigerian students achieved success in the June 2023 Cambridge examination series, while four achieved success in the November 2023 examination series.

He said six Nigerian students were from Brookstone School, James Hope College, Lagos and Ambassadors Group of Schools.

The National Director said that Oluwademilade David and Omaghomi Sharon of Brookstone School were the winners of the June 2023 series.

He added that Obodoechi Chiedozie, Favour Chinecherem and Fehintoluwa Erinayo were from James Hope College, Lagos, while Bamidele Sharon was from Ambassadors Group of Schools.

Pearson also said that 95 students from 37 British Council partner schools achieved a remarkable result, achieving the highest grades in British Council partner schools in Nigeria.

He said: “These cover subjects such as Sociology, ICT and Business Economics.

“This award is given to students who have achieved the highest grades in the world in a single subject.

“In addition, 71 students received the Top in Nigeria award for achieving the highest score in the country in individual subjects.

Additional accolades include 48 “High Achievement” awards and eight “Best Across” awards, which recognize students with the highest cumulative grades across multiple subjects.

“We use rigorous criteria to calculate Cambridge Awards. These criteria ensure that the results we recognise are consistent across the world across all subjects and at all levels of qualification,” the official said.

Pearson said the globally recognised qualifications helped students attend top universities, find outstanding career opportunities and prepare for more rewarding lives.

The National Director said the council is honoured to work with partner schools to deliver UK assessments and qualifications in Nigeria.

Mr Juan Visser, Regional Director for International Education in Sub-Saharan Africa at the University of Cambridge, congratulated the Nigerian students on their academic achievements in the June and November 2023 examinations.

Visser said that every element of the Cambridge education – the curriculum, teaching and learning, resources and assessment – has been carefully designed to help students reach their potential.

“The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards recognise outstanding performance in Cambridge exams around the world.

“The awards reflect the talent and hard work of the students and recognize the dedication and commitment of their teachers and parents.

“With the qualifications they gain, Cambridge students are well prepared to take on the exciting opportunities that await them and to realise their dreams.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Oluwademilade David said he was thrilled to receive this recognition.

David said the recognition took hard work.

He advised Nigerian students to put in their best efforts in their studies.
