Nigerians ridicule Multichoice as the pay TV operator laments 18% drop in DStv subscribers.

The announcement made by Africa’s premium pay-TV operator, Multichoice Group, blaming Nigeria’s tough economic conditions for active DStv subscribers in the country having declined by 18% has brought joy to many Nigerians.

The company, in its financial results for the year ending March 31, 2024, had stated that the downturn in Nigeria impacted its overall customer base resulting in a decline of 9% for the year.

It added that although total subscription figures for Nigeria were not stated as they are combined with other operating units outside South Africa which are tagged as ‘Rest of Africa’ (RoA), the 18% decline in Nigeria saw RoA’s total active subscribers fall by 13% to 8, 1 million from 9.3 million in 2023.

“The group’s 9% decline in active customers was primarily due to a 13% decline in business across Africa as mass market customers in countries such as Nigeria had to prioritize basic needs over entertainment, while businesses in South Africa showed greater resilience with the decline 5%,” the company said in its report.

“The Nigerian economy and consumers faced persistent challenges throughout FY24. “Removal of fuel subsidies, sharp currency depreciation with the value of the official naira halving, inflation rising to over 30%, and high emigration of the middle and upper classes drove an 18% YoY decline in active customers,” he said.

However, Nigerians on social media are not willing to accept this narrative as they believe the company’s regular increase in the price of flower bouquets has led to a decline in customers.

In 2023 alone, Multichoice has tripled the prices of its DStv and GOtv bouquets.

In April this year, the company announced another increase that came into effect on May 1 despite protests from Nigerians and an order issued by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) barring the company from implementing the new prices based on a case filed by Nigerian customers. from the company.

Multichoice ignored the court order and implemented the new prices, prompting the Court to impose a fine of N150 million on the company, as well as ordering it to give Nigerian customers one month free subscription on DSTV and GOTV, an order that Multichoice refused to comply with.

I went to pay 12,500. I also didn’t go to the game because I said I wanted to watch a movie🙄nor can that be said about new films or films from the 90s 🙄🙄🙄

@OgbeniOlabode1: “These people need to understand that the service they provide is something that most people can’t do without… Except for businesses that produce food, clothing and shelter, there is no other business that people can’t afford to give up if it costs becomes unbearable. ”

@Jimada_Gana: “They haven’t seen anything. They had to cancel the date and location, let me go and immediately throw away the set-top box for them.”
