The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, criticized the driving companies based on apps including Uber, Bolt, Lagride and Indrrive on what described as accusations of exploitation commission collected on drivers.

President Tinubu swears to Nnanna Uzor-Kalu as Commissioner Nava

Speaking at a press conference organized by the chapter of Lagos of the Union Amalgamata of the transporters of Nigeria (Auaton) based on app, Thursday, the president of the NLC Funmi Sessi sentenced 25 % to 35 % of the Commissioner collected by the platforms from the earnings of the drivers, despite not having contributed to the property or maintenance of the vehicle.

“These app companies do not provide vehicles. They do not feed or maintain them and do not face the regulatory obstacles that drivers make,” Sessi said.

“Everything they do is to provide an app and make a huge percentage. It is exploiter.”

He also criticized the companies for imposing arbitrary prices structures, failing to provide safety networks or insurance for drivers and ignoring their well -being despite having done billions from the Nigerian market.

“Drivers buy and maintain their vehicles, manage the problems of the police and work for long hours, yet they remained with peanuts,” he said.

“There must be justice in the structure of the Commission.”

Sessi invited the Chamber of the Lagos State Assembly to introduce legislation that regulates e-Etti services and protects the rights of drivers. He also supported a national policy that guarantees fair work standards, data transparency and security in the sector.

Having echoed his concerns, the president of Auaton Lagos, Azeez Jaiyesimi, stressed that drivers were not people looking for work but entrepreneurs who had operated before the entrance of the app companies.

“These companies have not created jobs for us: they created only a platform.

“We have always been taxi drivers,” said Jaiyesimi.

“They have arrived as intermediaries, yet now they impose without regard for operating costs.”

Jaiyesimi observed that the current price model has led to a poor supply of services through platforms due to the driver’s adjustment and low earnings.

He urged a collaborative tariff revision system between drivers and app companies to ensure that prices are equitable for drivers and passengers.

“We understand the economic situation that also affects passengers and we are not asking for unreasonable rates,” he said. “We only want rates that reflect the real cost of providing the service.”

The Union and the NLC have both asked for immediate dialogues and reforms in the e-Eabing sector to protect the means of existence of drivers and guarantee a sustainable sector for the trip to Nigeria. [The Star]
