The former Ivory Coast midfielder, Yaya Toure, admitted that the former captain of Super Eagles, John Mikel Obi, would have had to win the 2013 Caf Player of the Year.
Mikel was considered the favorite to win the Caf African Player of the Year award that year, after an impressive season in which he played a fundamental role in the triumph of the UEFA Champions League of Chelsea and helped Nigeria lifted the African Nations Cup.
Despite his exceptional shows, the prize went to Toure, who claimed the title for the third consecutive year.
Speaking on Obi One Podcast, the former captain of the Ivory Coast admitted that Mikel was the most deserving candidate.
“You deserved it, Obi, to tell the truth, because in the championship the season was perfect. Nigeria won the AFCC and you were decisive in this period,” said Toure.
Toure continued saying that he had no preliminary knowledge of the CAF who would win the prize and revealed that he would have been equally happy if Mikel had received honor.
“The fact is that nothing was told [by CAF] And I said Obi deserved it at that moment. If I were me or he [Obi Mikel]It would have been fine, but the big question was me who participated in the ceremony. If we don’t go there, who will support?
“We have seen the Europeans support their causes, their events and their things. We Africans want to do it, but we must make sure to unite and go together.”
