NNPC Ltd Scandal Lost N210 Trillion: Nigeria has become a crime scene, Obi said

The presidential candidate from the Labor Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi described Nigeria as “TKP” after the disclosure of large -scale financial irregularities in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) with a total of large N210 trillion.

In a statement about the verified X platform (previously Twitter), Friday, June 20, 2025, Obi noted that with the greatest sadness he once again reiterated what he had said consistently: Nigeria had become a crime scene.

His comments will come after the recent audit by the Senate that the NNPC Ltd between 2017 and 2023 revealed “₦ 210 trillion in financial deviations,” including “₦ 103 trillion in what is called ‘expenditure that still needs to be paid’ and ₦ 107 trillion in countless receipts”.

Reacting to the exposure, he noted that the total Nigerian national budget in the same period amounted to ₦ 88.01 trillion, which was less than half of the lost or questioned funds.

Listen to him, “very sadly I once again reiterated what I said consistently: Nigeria has become a crime scene.

How else someone explains the revelation recently by the Senate, who revealed an audited account from NNPC from 2017 to 2023? The senate revealed ₦ 210 trillion in financial deviations, ₦ 103 trillion in what is called “expenditure that still to be paid”, and ₦ 107 trillion in no “costs that are not done.” No documentation.

“This is not just another scandal, this is a clear and burdensome confirmation of a country held hostage by monumental corruption.

“Our national budget in the 2017 to 2023 period is as follows:

2017 ₦ 7,440 trillion.

2018 ₦ 9,120 trillion

2019 ₦ 8,916 trillion

2020 ₦ 10,590 was initially approved and in June was revised to ₦ 9,974 trillion due to Covid.

2021 ₦ 13,588 trillion.

2022 ₦ 17,130 trillion

2023 ₦ 21,830 trillion

Total: ₦ 88,010 trillion

“Our total national budget in that period is not up to 50% of the financial differences and deviations.

“This is a criminal betrayal which is institutionalized to the people of Nigeria and a great threat to the future of the people that our children will live in.

“There is no responsible country that can continue to function like this without facing this truth. This crime disguised as a government must be stopped and dismantled for a better Nigeria,” he wrote.
