North Can condemn the Nigerian government amnesty program for repenting terrorists

The northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the Nigerian government amnesty program for terrorists who repent while terror attacks continue in the region.

Chairman of Northern Can, Rev. Joseph Hayab, who blamed the program launched in 2015 under the Corridor of Operation Safe and aimed to reduce, rehabilitate and re -integrate the former rebels into the community through psychological counseling, vocational training, and religious orientation, questioning its effectiveness.

Hayab, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, said that the Amnesty program was not yet effective because there was a “confidence deficit that had prevented people from providing information to security operators.”

He noted that although there was an original effort to rehabilitate the repentant bandits, there was still “a surge of sadness in violence attacks, which had made the ball down into a mass murder, destroy many communities and leaving hundreds of people killed.

“People are afraid to say what they know and see because they believe it will rise back to them. We need to find a way to build that trust so that people can express intelligent information to security and government institutions,” said Chairman Can.

He also regretted the fact that the government’s efforts and amnesty programs did not bring changes that had an impact on the war against terrorism.

“Who among the criminals brought to the book? Who among those who faced the trial? Who has been sentenced?” Hayab asked.

“The fact is that what the government is called amnesty makes people not trust them. The government must stop bragging about the amnesty program because it makes people not trust them.

“Eighty percent of those who undergo a rehabilitation program will return to become an informant for bandits.

“You leave the victim, who is tortured by the same criminals and collects large money. You then rehabilitate the criminal with money, while the victim is still suffering. How will he trust you? So, until and unless we do the necessary things, nothing will change,” he stressed.
