What we found, near the city of Lod, halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, felt somewhat like a flash-mob protest, done and sprinkled in less than half an hour.

The protesters have burned tires, which are burning across the toll road, filling the sky with thick black smoke.

They waved Israel Other yellow flags and flags to show solidarity with the remaining hostages that are still in Gaza, whose photos they carry – their faces and names burning collective awareness now – collective trauma.

‘This is an eternal war’

“This is very complicated, very demanding and very busy. The main problem is to see that you follow the rules and there are many rules of safety, international law rules, military doctrine rules.

“And to see that there are no mistakes because you can check all the rules, you can make everything perfect, if there is a mistake, it goes through everything you do and the bomb will fall on someone you don’t want to do.”

I asked him how he felt about the death toll in Gaza.

“Look, the death toll that is not involved is difficult. Personally, it is difficult emotionally, it is difficult professionally. It should not have happened.

“When you make a war on this scale, it will happen. That will happen because of mistakes, because of the chaos of war.”

He was said gently, considered and wisely, but said he was ready to take part in a more radical protest, such as blocking the highway and starting a fire, to try and convey messages.

“Hamas may be the weakest enemy we have ever had since 1948,” he said.

“In ’48, in the liberation of Israel, we fought with seven troops, far better, better ordered than us, and war requires less time.

“We stopped the war with Iran after 12 days. They were far more dangerous than Hamas. We stop the war with Hezbollah in a few months, and they are still a threat that is far greater than Hamas.

“You cannot eliminate terror organizations to the last person. From my perspective, this way – this is an eternal war.”
