The Special Intelligence Team of the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) (SIS) has dismantled illegal refineries in Obiapu Forest, Ukwa West, Abia State.
According to NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi, these refineries were involved in illegal oil trafficking, sabotaging the nation’s economy.
In a statement on Tuesday, Afolabi said the commander of the CG SIS, Deputy Commander Appolos Dandaura, informed journalists that four suspects, part of a known syndicate, had been arrested.
They were operating several artisanal oil refineries in the dense forest.
The suspects, Oluchi Ibuh (39, Anambra State), Michael Isaac (31, Edo State), Chioma Osioma (32, Imo State) and Ebere Chike (32, Anambra State), were caught with stolen crude oil , refined locally. Diesel fuel (AGO), and various tools used in their operations.
The team dismantled several illegal connections to pipelines used for the transfer of crude oil. At the crime scene, authorities found galvanized pipes, industrial pipes, large quantities of stolen crude oil, fabricated tanks, cooking pots, pit tanks, calibrated plastic tanks, and cellophane bags used for packaging. Unquantifiable liters of illegally refined AGO, metal buckets and shovels were also seized.
The suspects are cooperating in the investigation and will be charged in court.
