The governor of the state of Bayelsa, Senator Doeye Diri, has rewarded Bayelsa athletes who proud of the State at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, state of Ogun.

Team Bayelsa finished third according to the official medal table declared by the National Sports Commission, maintaining its podium.

Upon receiving the contingent within the cameras of the Executive Council of the Government House, Yenagoa, Governor Diri said that the sport has become a window of opportunities and empowerment for young people in the state.

Governor Diri, who was at the closing ceremony of the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, said he was shocked by the tour of the medal table due to the gap between the host state, Ogun and Bayelsa, hours until the closing ceremony, stating that before leaving Abeokuta, he had already noticed some inonverse practices that were ongoing.

According to the state helmsman, Team Bayelsa did not end third but secondly at the medal table, maintaining that, apart from the perennial champions, Delta that Bayelsa’s threat was Delta and not host, the state of Ogun.

“On behalf of his prosperity government and the people of Bayelsa, I congratulate all our athletes and all our officials for making us proud in the Gateway games in Abeokuta, state of Ogun. I do not think you have taken third, I think you have finished second in the games,” the governor emphasized.

He hinted that the State is committed to organizing the National Sports Festival 2028 in Bayelsa with the construction of the 25,000 capacity for Igbogene in Yenagoa, the state capital, urging the various ministries involved in the construction to ensure that the stadium is completed in stipulated time.

Senator Diri announced a cash reward from one million naira (#1,000,000,000) to each gold medalist, the gold medal athletes of the team would smile at the bank with seven hundred thousand naira (#700,000), the silver medalists five hundred thousand naira (#500,000), while the team medalists will obtain three hundred fifty thousand each one (#350,000).

He explained that the bronze medalists would smile home with three hundred thousand Nairras (#300,000) each, while the bronze medalists of the team would receive two hundred thousand naira (#200,000).

Athlete officials of the Gold Medal will also receive one million Naira each (#1,000,000,000), the technical official of the gold medal will also smile home with seven hundred thousand Nairras (#700,000) each.

The Governor Diri also explained that the officials of the Silver Medal team would go home with five hundred thousand Nairras (#500,000), the technical officials of the Silver Medal will receive four hundred thousand naira (#400,000) each, the officials of the bronze medal team will get two hundred thousand naira (#200,000) each, the officials of the Ministry of Sports Development and the Council Sports They will receive#1.5 million naira.

He also promised to reward the members of the Local Organizing Committee with (#1,000,000), officials of the Festival Secretariat (#700,000) each, essential personnel, three hundred thousand Nairras (#300,000), the support personnel will go home with (#200,000) each, urging the finance commissioner to immediately free the athletes to the athletes.

The Sports Development Commissioner, Dr. Daniel Igali, in his comment, said that the state medals position at Gateway games was not a real reflection of the performance of Team Bayelsa at the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta.

Sports director Bayels State Sports Council, Sir Braveman Wodi, in an interview, appreciated the governor for the great investment in sports development in the state, pointing out that the gesture of the helmsman of the state is a testimony of his passion for sports.
