NWFL SUPER-6: Edo Queens Win 5-1, Top Player Says Their Target Is League Title

Edo Queens of Benin City set the ball rolling in this year’s Super-6 contest of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) with an emphatic 5-1 trouncing of Confluence Queens of Lokoja, and one of the winning side’s players said their eyes are already fixed on the title.

The verdict from Maryam Aluko-Abdulrasheed came hot on the heels of her side’s stunning start to the title race at Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where action resumes on Monday after a day off tomorrow.

Although she played as a second half substitute in the one-sided encounter, Aluko said she was happy with the result and glad to have played a role in Edo Queens’ march to victory.

While alluding to great teamwork and joint efforts from everyone in the squad, Aluko also gave thanks to God for making the day’s victory possible.

She added: “God was on our side in today’s game, because it’s not by our power alone. We thank God for giving us victory in the game.

“We worked for it, and we earned the points, but all glory to The Almighty.”
Aluko then cited the importance of snatching maximum points in their opening match, especially as the side from Benin City want to be crowned champions at the end of the Super 6 contest on May 26th.

“This victory means a lot to us, because our aim is to win this Super-6. So, winning our first game is a good opportunity for us to carry the league title,” Aluko stressed.

The amiable lass concluded with an expose of her personal ambition and targets, which she disclosed are in tandem with her club’s joint aspirations.

“My personal target is to help my club as a team player and to score as many goals as possible, so that the purpose of our coming to the Super-6 will be accomplished.

“I entered this game in the second half, but I still put in my best. There was no injury, and I give Almighty Allah all glory,” she concluded.
