Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said Friday that his mother carried him for 12 months because of the power of witches.
Obasanjo, according to a statement issued by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, stated this during the presentation of a drama titled: βAremu Omo Asabi at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The stage play was held to commemorate the 66th death anniversary of the former president’s mother, Bernice Obasanjo.
He remembered the difficulties his mother faced before his birth and attributed the delay to supernatural forces.
Nevertheless, she remained grateful to God for His intervention which caused her delivery to go smoothly.

Obasanjo said: βMy mother carried me for 12 months before I was born, and it is said that witches played a role and made her suffer.
βShe gave birth to nine children, but only two of us, my sister and I, survived.
βI am the only one who has an education. My father thought that educating a girl was unnecessary because she would end up in the kitchen.β
The former Nigerian leader expressed regret that his mother was not alive to see his achievements and enjoy the fruits of his labor.
He promised to support the drama group’s ambition to break the Guinness World Record for the longest open-air drama performance.
