Obasanjo gives advice on how Nigeria can achieve good governance and development

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerians to change, and install responsible and transformative leadership at every level of government if they want good governance and a better country to become a reality.

The former president lamented that for years, quality leadership had eluded the country at all levels.

He spoke on Saturday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital at the 2024 edition of the International Leadership Empowerment Conference (LEIC) and the conferment of Doctor of Leadership (DL) and Doctor of Theology (D.Th) degrees to several Nigerians by the South Africa-based Immanuel International Theological Institute in partnership with the Nigeria-based Priesthood Leadership Development Initiative Inc (PLDI).

The elder statesman stated that leadership is the bane of Nigeria, and if the country can implement the right leadership at every level, everything else will work out.
Obasanjo said the country was plagued at all levels by leaders who were self-serving, lacking knowledge and understanding.

Two former Ogun State Commissioners, Mr. Anthony Ojeshina and Honourable Dele Obadina and former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Chief Joju Fadairo; Founder, Penpushing Media, Prince Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji and 16 other prominent personalities were conferred Honorary Doctorates at the event.

Obasanjo commended the International Coordinator of the Imamate Leadership Development Initiative, Prof. Olusesi Obateye, and the President of the South Africa-based institution, Prof. Van Den Berg Edward Alfred for recognizing and encouraging several Nigerians with leadership capacities.

“There is no end to leadership and service to the community until you take your last breath. And you are never too old to be a leader and to give something back to the community you lead and serve as a leader, to serve your state, your country, your continent and the world.

“And if you ask me in one word, what is the curse of Nigeria today? I wouldn’t think twice. I would say it is leadership. Self-serving leadership; leadership that lacks knowledge and understanding and leadership that does not see service as the essence of leadership.

“If we can put in the right leadership, we will be able to do other things right. That is what Prof. Olusesi Obateye did and that is commendable and very good. We must encourage and instill good leadership into every level of our national life,” Obasanjo said.
