Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has taken proactive steps towards a smooth handover of power, inaugurating a 20-member transition committee four months before the end of his administration.
Obaseki inaugurated the committee at the EXCO Room, Government House, Benin City, with some members of the committee joining virtually.
The governor said, โToday is July 11, 2024 and it will be exactly four months since I handed over the reigns to the next governor-elect of Edo State. As a global best practice, I have constituted a transition team that will be responsible for documenting the achievements of this administration in the last eight years.
โThe team will go through and retrieve all the documents and all other materials related to the policy decisions that have been taken by this administration in every area of โโgovernment and governance over the last seven years and put them in a structured order in the data room. I believe most of these materials are almost digitized.

โA proper and organized digital data space will be created, where all documents related to every activity, contract, EXCO decision, presentation and policy paper in every field will be captured, documented and recorded as it will serve as institutional memory for the next administration and beyond.โ
The committee, chaired by former Finance Commissioner Joseph Eboigbe, is tasked with documenting the achievements of the current administration over the past eight years. This documentation is essential to ensure the sustainability of ongoing projects and facilitate a clear understanding of the stateโs financial and operational landscape for the new leadership.
Obasekiโs early move to form a transition committee is noteworthy. It shows his intention to prioritize a smooth transition, and potentially avoid last-minute hurdles that could disrupt governance.
