Obi praised Tinubu for replicating his borehole project, and urged a focus on poverty alleviation

The Labor Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, Peter Obi, has praised President Bola Tinubu for launching the national borehole project, a charitable initiative that is in line with Obi’s own efforts to provide water access for oppressed communities.

In a statement issued by Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) in Abuja on Sunday, Obi media office commended Tinubu for heeding his call to wealthy Nigerians to join him in the creation of boreholes across the country.

“Peter Obi Media Reach Office, POMR, thanks President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for heeding the call of our Principal, Labor Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, to rich Nigerians to join him in ensuring the provision of holes drill across the country for the oppressed in our midst,” Tanko Yunusa, Obi’s spokesperson said in the statement.

Obi had previously embarked on a borehole project, installing several boreholes in several Northern states, including Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kano, Zaria, Kebbi, Suleja, Niger State and Sokoto, where the water scarcity situation is dire.

The President’s directive to construct 400 boreholes across the country as part of a charity initiative in memory of his late mother, Alhaja Abibatu Magaji, is a welcome development, according to Obi’s media office.

While praising the President’s charitable spirit, POMR suggested that this new thinking be reflected in government projects, which currently prioritize “fake projects such as coastal highways, luxury homes, flyovers, and jet purchases” over poverty alleviation.

The statement said it was “shameful” that millions of Nigerians lack access to clean drinking water, proper healthcare and education, while millions of young people are unemployed. However, the President’s new spirit of charity, if continued, could help eradicate poverty in Nigeria.

The statement read: “Peter Obi Media Reach Office, POMR thanks President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for listening to the call of our Principal, Labor Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi to rich Nigerians to join forces. he was in ensuring the provision of boreholes throughout the country for the oppressed in our midst.

“Obi started this project after witnessing what many Nigerians go through in their efforts to obtain basic needs such as drinking water.

“He has installed several Boreholes as a short term solution in some of the northern states of Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kano, Zaria, Kebbi, Suleja Niger State and Sokoto where the situation is acute.

“On the special anniversary of the death of his mother, Alhaja Abibatu Magaji in Abuja at the weekend, the President announced a national project to construct 400 boreholes in furtherance of his charity in memory of his late mother.

“POMR appreciates the President’s generous spirit because it is in line with the school principal’s desire to help the poor in our midst.

“POMR would like to advise that the President’s new mindset be reflected in government projects which currently do not answer the longings of the poor people in our midst.

“It is shameful that in a country where millions of people have no access to clean drinking water, millions of children are out of school and have no access to proper health services, and millions of young people are out of work, the government is still prioritizing fake projects like coastal highways, luxury homes, flyovers and purchasing jets etc as a priority.

“The President’s new spirit of generosity if this continues will help lift many Nigerians out of poverty if this is done by diversifying.”
