Labor Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the president’s recent attempts to undermine him by comparing him to former US President Donald Trump. Obi sees the comparison as a clear indication of the government’s weakness.
In a statement issued through his Media Office on Sunday and titled “Why did Obi’s desperate translator have to die?”, Obi’s spokesman Ibrahim Umar in Abuja, slammed the comparison. The statement accused the current administration of failing to grasp the reality and hardships its policies have caused the country over the past year.
Obi’s statement highlights that the government’s attempts to tarnish his reputation reflect their desperation and incompetence. It reads, “For these detractors, it would be a gross oversight if a day goes by without finding something that could negatively implicate Obi in the media space. If he and his family are not being arrested in imaginary ways (kites flown to test the waters?), he is being blatantly accused of sponsoring violence or his public appearances are being twisted to suit dubious motives.”

The statement also mocked the President’s attempt to link Obi to Donald Trump, calling it “the most ridiculous delusion” and saying the comparison was an attempt to gain support from Democrats. The statement asked, “Does your calling Peter Obi ‘a Trump’ mean Tinubu is Harris?”
Obi further pointed out that comparing himself and Tinubu to US presidential candidates Trump and Harris ignores significant differences in morality, transparency and policy focus. He asserted that Nigerians are not easily fooled by such propaganda.
The statement criticized the administration for attacking Obi instead of addressing its own failures, noting the irony of slandering a leader who has long been known for his prominence and accountability, in contrast to the current President’s aloofness and avoidance of public engagement.
Obi’s statement affirmed his role as a spokesman for the people and a symbol of hope for a more just democracy. It also condemned the government’s tactics of misrepresenting its position and intentions. Obi has consistently stated that his focus is on fixing Nigeria, not pursuing the presidency out of desperation.
The statement concluded with an appeal to Nigerians, especially Obi supporters, to remain focused on their vision for a better Nigeria, despite the current government’s attempts to divert attention and mislead.
