The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) says it will appeal the decision of the FIFA disciplinary committee rejecting its petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo for fielding ineligible players in the World Cup qualifying playoff, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Nigeria protested that several players from the Democratic Republic of Congo team were ineligible for the match, which they won 4-3 on penalties to pick the only ticket to represent Africa in the intercontinental playoff in Mexico.
The players violated the constitutional requirements to be bona fide citizens of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as they have dual nationality, which is prohibited and not recognized by the country’s laws.
Confirming the rejection of the petition, NFF Secretary General Dr. Sanusi Mohammed said they will appeal the decision, keeping alive the hope of obtaining a favorable ruling.
“We have received the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on our petition, but we are not satisfied with the decision, which rejected our petition. I want to assure Nigerians that the NFF has immediately started the process of appealing the decision,” said NFF Secretary General Dr. Mohammed Sanusi.
