Ogun 2027: Why the political equation may be hanging in the balance in Senator…

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo with President Tinubu

As issues ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship race continue to gather momentum, one name increasingly refuses to remain on the sidelines: Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello.

What initially seemed to some observers to be a courageous but uphill aspiration is gradually beginning to take the form of a serious political movement. For the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the signs are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: the atmosphere is changing, the conversations are becoming louder and the pieces seem to be falling into place.

In less than two months since she threw her hat in the ring, the political temperature in the Gateway State has risen significantly. Old assumptions are being put to the test. Previously dominant narratives are being disrupted. And some entrenched interests that might once have viewed the race as a foregone conclusion are now forced to take a second look.

With a steady stream of strategic appearances since February, a deliberate return to the public square and now highly symbolic photo opportunities with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, many political observers are starting to accept a new reality: Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s governorship aspiration is no longer just a statement, but is fast emerging as a serious factor in Ogun’s evolving 2027 contest.

His political re-emergence was anything but accidental.

Having formally declared her intention to contest the Ogun governorship under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the epidemiology professor has moved quickly to redefine herself in the public consciousness – not simply as a former senator or daughter of a former president, but as a proven administrator, seasoned intellectual and possible bridge between inherited politics and a new conversation on governance in Ogun State.

In her statement, she presented herself as a service-oriented leader, with a clear focus on inclusive development, women’s empowerment, infrastructure renovation and educational advancement. More importantly, he left no one in doubt about his seriousness, making it clear that he is not competing to make up the numbers, but to win.

What seems to add a new level of intrigue – and perhaps a strategic advantage – is its visible alignment with the current national power structure.

In recent weeks, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has made no secret of her support for President Tinubu’s reform agenda. In his statement, he openly praised the President’s economic reforms and cited major national projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as evidence of a long-term economic vision. In political terms, this was no casual observation. It was a signal – and in some quarters, a very strong one.

Given the historical complexities often associated with the Obasanjo-Tinubu axis, his posture has naturally attracted attention. But beyond words, optics matter in politics – and in Nigerian politics they matter even more.

His widely circulated photo moments with President Tinubu have sparked new conversations in Ogun’s political landscape. In a state where access, acceptability and alignment within the APC power matrix can prove decisive long before primaries, such images are interpreted by many as more than just ceremonial courtesies. They project relevance. They suggest access. They hint at recognition.

And in a governorship race that may ultimately be decided as much by internal party arithmetic as by public sentiment, such symbolism can have real political weight.

Yet, perhaps even more significant is the fact that his growing visibility is not limited to headlines and photo opportunities.

With unusual energy and renewed purpose, he also engaged structured political stakeholders almost daily. In one of the clearest indications that her campaign is moving beyond symbolic declaration towards active grassroots work, Senator Iyabo recently met with the Inter-Party Consultative Council (IPAC) in Ogun State, where she called for collaboration among political actors to reduce tension and curb electoral violence ahead of 2027.

During that effort, he also launched a broader governance approach focused on job creation through industrialization and agriculture, digital skills development, healthcare and education. It was a move that suggested a campaign that sought to balance elite recognition with issue-based credibility.

Of particular significance was the revelation by IPAC Chairman Abayomi Sanyaolu that until now only three gubernatorial aspirants had been formally recognized by the council – and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo was among them.

This is no small detail. In a crowded and fluid pre-primary environment where many aspirants are still testing the waters, visibility is important, recognition and lasting commitment. In politics, perception often precedes momentum, and momentum, once established, can quickly become a force of its own.

Professor Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, after all, is not a political novice.

She is a former Senator who represented Ogun Central from 2007 to 2011, former Commissioner for Health of Ogun State and an experienced academic and epidemiologist with international credentials. That combination of political experience, technocratic depth and family pedigree gives her a distinct identity in the race, one that few, if any, of her rivals can easily replicate.

His statement clearly went beyond mere ambition. His public support for Tinubu’s reform agenda signaled both ideological and strategic positioning. His consultations with key stakeholders have added weight and seriousness to his aspiration. Its growing visibility in the media has revived its political relevance. And those closely watched appearances with the President have only strengthened the perception that, on the ever-complex chessboard of Ogun 2027, things may indeed turn around for her.

And so, for Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, this could be a season of great momentum.

It’s no longer just another name in the running. He is fast becoming one of the defining stories of the Ogun governorship battle – and perhaps, one of its most closely watched contenders.
