Ogun allocates housing units to subscribers

●States that the scheme is not for profit but service oriented

The Ogun State Government will, from Monday next week, begin the allocation of 200 housing units to subscribers of the Kobape Phase III Housing Programme.

The Commissioner for Housing, Alhaji Jamiu Akande Omoniyi, made this known on Thursday while addressing a press conference on the activities of his ministry.

The Commissioner added that the housing policy of the Dapo Abiodun-led administration was not for profit but rather was a social service to the people of the State and those in the diaspora who wished to live and work in the Gateway State.

Omoniyi, therefore, putting to rest controversies over the allocation process, said that of the 200 season ticket holders, 110 will receive their allocation letters from Monday on a first-come, first-served basis.

He urged season ticket holders to pay attention to their names, while stressing that 36 other defaulters would have their deposits refunded.

“Of the 200 Kobape Phase 111 subscribers who wrote and defamed the government, we will immediately allocate 110 housing units. These 110 were built based on individual circumstances and, importantly, on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“From our records, 36 season ticket holders have defaulted and decisions have been made to refund them immediately. Although there is a clause in their award letter that whenever such things happen, there will be 10 percent deductions as administrative charges.

“But Prince Dapo Abiodun has magnanimously waived all this. They will get their 100 percent refunds,” he said.

The commissioner further noted that the remaining 54 subscribers will receive their allotment in the next batch as their files are currently being examined by the Ministry of Finance and Internal Audit.

“As soon as everything is settled, it will be just 27 blocks of 2 bedrooms, which we will undertake and complete soon. The houses will be handed over to them. You can be sure that since the houses are bungalows, the houses will be completed in two to three months.

“The Ogun State Government, under Prince Dapo Abiodun, remains the best in Nigeria in providing affordable homes. When others were selling their two bedrooms at 15 million naira, our benchmark was 5.5 million naira in 2019. It has built more than 4000 housing units since its inception, which is more than the administrations previous ones put together had made since 1976.

“This is because the main inputs in the construction of these houses were fully subsidized by the state government. What the subscribers paid for were only the buildings. The government gave the land free of charge and also provided the infrastructure,” Omoniyi added.

He further explained that three estates in Sagamu, Ijebu Ode and Ilaro with a total of 500 housing units will be commissioned as soon as the works are completed and the houses are currently being painted.
