The torch was handed over to the governor at the city door along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu highway by Dorcas Adesakan, famous champion and double-gold medalist at the 2014 African Youth Games.

Governor Abiodun described the unity torch as a symbol of collective aspirations, resilience and national cohesion.

“Torch Unity, which begins its trip through the Federation in March, symbolizes more than the next Gateway games. Encarna our collective aspirations as a nation where diversity strengthens our unity and where our young people are empowered to shine on the global stage,” he said.

Reiterating the preparation of the state of Ogun to organize the prestigious sporting event for the second time, Abiodun emphasized that the torch also represents peace, friendship and mutual respect among Nigerians, especially young people.

“This is more than a sports festival; it is a reaffirmation of our unity, diversity and the durable Nigerian spirit. Ogun is ready to show not only athletic excellence but also our rich culture and a warm hospitality,” he said.

The National Sports Festival, set for the first time in 1973 to foster unity through sports spirit, officially begins on Friday with athletes from all over the country converging to compete, connect and celebrate the rich heritage of Nigeria.
