Balancing the nerves with faith, Nixon admitted that he felt immense tension before his first game.
“My heart was beating very fast. I said: ‘God, I trust you.’ A friend encouraged me to relax, and once the fight began, my trust took over.”
Although it comes from a background in the traditional struggle of the village, where a touch from the hand to the ground ends the fight, Nixon adapts quickly to the modern rules, which require pins on the back.
“In my town, touching the floor with my hands ends the game. Here, you must fix your opponent’s back. It demands more strength, agility and focus.”
Looking to the future, the 86 kg contender planned to carry out the lessons learned and approach his semifinal partner with the renewed courage.
“Next time, I will enter the ring full of confidence. This is just the beginning, I will train hard when I return home.”
Nixon’s innovative performance adds to Adamawa’s growing struggle pedigree and points to a brilliant future for the newcomer on the Nigeria national stage.
