Ogunmodede bets on Remo Stars as a permanent player for the Super Eagles

Remo Stars head coach Daniel Ogunmodede has expressed his openness to taking up a permanent role as assistant coach of the Super Eagles, if the opportunity arises.

Ogunmodede was recently appointed alongside Rangers international coach Fidelis Ilechukwu as interim assistant to Augustine Eguavoen for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

He led Remo Stars to a second-place finish last season in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), while Ilechukwu guided Rangers to the title.

The Remo Stars head coach led them to second place in the NPFL last season.

His first assignment with the Super Eagles was a resounding success as Nigeria recorded a dominant 3-0 victory over Benin Republic, thanks to two goals from Ademola Lookman and a goal from Victor Osimhen.

For years, the Nigeria Football Federation has maintained a tradition of selecting high-performance coaches from the NPFL to work as assistants to the national team, usually on a part-time basis.

This tradition was honoured with the appointments of Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu for the AFCON qualifiers.

Following the victory against Benin Republic, in an interview with 54footballx, he expressed his willingness to continue in his position on a more permanent basis if the opportunity arises.

The Remo Stars manager stressed his sense of duty towards national service and his readiness to answer the call if it arose.

“Any good opportunity that comes from the national team, I can hardly say no,” Ogunmodede said.

“Especially if it comes from the coach or the Federation. If they want me to stay, I will be more than willing to serve.”

The Super Eagles have now turned their attention to their upcoming AFCON qualifier against Rwanda, having landed in Kigali on Sunday evening ahead of Tuesday’s crucial encounter.

The Super Eagles depart Uyo and head to Kigali, Rwanda for their next group match of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

A win in this encounter could strengthen the case for both NPFL coaches to be considered for permanent positions in the national team.
