Nigeria ended the Paris 2024 Paralympics on a golden note as Folashade Oluwafemiayo won the gold medal in the +86kg Para Powerlifting division on Sunday, Sports 247 reports.
Oluwafemiayo won the gold medal with a world record lift of 167kg, twokg more than the previous world record he held.
Oluwafemiayo left no one in doubt when she cleanly lifted 157kg on her first attempt, an effort that is 7kg more than her nearest rival, China’s Xuemi, who lifted 150kg.
Oluwafemiayo lifted 162kg in her second attempt to equal the Paralympic record in the event set by her compatriots, Josephine Orji’s Paralympic record of 162kg.
She went on to break the record with a lift of 166kg to win gold before attempting the new record lift of 167kg.
It was a fine end to Nigeria’s quest at the Games, as going into the final day on Sunday there were high hopes of a two-gold medal chance but Loveline Obiji was disqualified at up to 86kg in the morning session but Oluwafemiayo’s feat made up for Obiji’s sad disqualification.
After 11 days of intense competition, Nigeria’s strong contingent of 23 athletes won a total of seven medals, including 2 gold, 3 silver and 2 silver medals.
The event, which began on August 28, 2024, ends today, Sunday, September 8, 2024, with a closing ceremony in France.
