Ondo: LP insists on Olorunfemi as governor candidate, rejects chief Afenifere

The Labour Party has rejected the Secretary-General of the Pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Olusola Ebiseni, as its candidate in the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State.

LP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, made the clarification in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi emerged as the party’s gubernatorial flagbearer in Ondo State at the primaries held in Akure in June.

He added that Ebiseni who contested for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket in the state but lost, has not renounced his PDP membership or identified himself with the LP in the state.

Ifoh said: β€œDr. Olorunfemi is the candidate of the Labour Party. He emerged after the gubernatorial primaries witnessed by the National Electoral Commission (NCC).

β€œHis name was then submitted to INEC and published as the candidate nominated by the Labour Party for the Ondo election.

β€œThe KPU has completed the nomination process and people are wondering how he could emerge without the involvement of the KPU and the support of the Labor Party.”

He also expressed concern that LP members were collaborating with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in fighting for the leadership of the party even though Julius Abure had been confirmed as the party chairman by the Court of Appeal.

The spokesperson therefore urged the police, Department of State Security (DSS) and other security agencies to arrest anyone who impersonates or is used to wage war through impersonation.

β€œThe Labour Party is poised to win the Ondo governorship election after fielding a very credible candidate who is a grassroots politician, a prominent Labour leader and a renowned educationist.

β€œWe think this evil alliance between Ebiseni and the APC-sponsored NLC is aimed at thwarting our expected victory in the election, but we will oppose it through all legal means.

β€œWe therefore appeal to all party members in Ondo, especially the Obidient family and all voters, to ignore the mobs opposing the party.

β€œCome out en masse to vote for Dr. Olorunfemi of the Labour Party, secure our votes and make sure our votes are counted,” Ifoh added.
