Only permanent interests matter in politics – Doyin Okupe

Former Director-General of President Obi-Datti’s 2023 presidential campaign organisation, Doyin Okupe, has reacted to the barrage of criticism that accompanied his open support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Okupe in an interview on Channels TV said he knew that Tinubu was the better candidate even though he was linked to LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, before the election.

He said: “Let me say, of all the people running for president in 2023, based on personal experience, Bola Tinubu is the best.

“Come to think of it, I’ve met Peter Obi, I’ve worked with Atiku Abubakar. I’ve known Bola Tinubu for a long time.

“But in terms of capacity, capability, knowledge and commitment, you know, people continue to underestimate what he has done in Lagos. He has done a tremendous job.”

However, this change in attitude caused many Nigerians to label him a traitor.

But in his post on X on Monday morning, Okupe made his stance clear by saying in the game of politics there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests.

He argued that “repeated failures, threatened interests, suffering, shame and disgrace are the consequences of not adhering to established political principles.”

He wrote: “

POLITICS 101

“In this game, there are no eternal friends and eternal enemies, only eternal interests.

POLITICS 102

If a friend was unpleasant yesterday, but can still serve your interests tomorrow, he is still a friend.

POLITICS 103

“In this political game, there is no room for passion, fanaticism, insults and abuse. Caution, self-control, politeness, diplomacy, moderation and tolerance are always advantageous to practice.

POLITICS 104

“Repeated failures, threatened interests, suffering, shame and humiliation are the consequences of not adhering to the three political principles set out above.
IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW. IF YOU DON’T KNOW, BE PREPARED TO LEARN.”
