Opinion: October 1, Anniversary, and Blues of a Country

Dear! This word may be best to capture the slogan for the 65th warning of our country’s independence. The Federal government launched, what might also be the slogan of the tongue-di-pipi, when revealing activities that will precede the celebration of the state’s birthday tomorrow. Nigeria gained political independence on October 1, 1960, in the midst of funfare and many hopes from Africa and the black world. The theme for birthdays that will peak tomorrow is “Nigeria @65: All hands in the deck for a bigger country”. As the government said, the theme underlines the need for collective efforts to consolidate past achievements and pursue greater national aspirations ‘under the new hope agenda’. The atmosphere of the country was violated and poisoned, but consolation for the victims targeted from the cruelty of Buhari which was stated publicly was that for eight years the country had experienced more things that were not present [not necessarily absence]and ‘non-government’. They are eight years of waste that dragged Nigeria back by, at least, one generation. If some Nigerians think that Buhari will be the end of a president who triggers hatred and division, then they do not take into account the arrival of his successor, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also from APC. Even before he accessed the office and power, he had openly stated that his president was his own, and Joruba. Tinubu is uncontrollably in placing his name or letting his maid attach his name in public buildings, institutions and infrastructure, nothing he built in two years of his term of office for four years. His appointment for Joruba to offices was actually limited to the state of Lagos where he became governor from 1999-2007. And almost all recipients come from between his children who work for him as governor. Of course, there are some outfits from the group. They are frozen. Buhari confirmed he mocked the Nigerians during his campaign for the re -election in 2018/2019 with his campaign slogan ‘Nextlevel’ which remained traced. Now Tinubu follows by mocking the Nigerians with the theme of the 65th anniversary of the country. If he does not mean to be cynical, how do you declare ‘all hands in the deck for a bigger country’ while your actions promote the exception of the Nigerian plot of the people? There are many examples of tinubu actions that are different from their calls so that all hands are in the deck to build a bigger country. Let’s illustrate with one. There is no national census in this country for about 20 years. The recipe is that the number of heads must occur in a country every ten years. Nigeria has nothing since the controversial and disputed census in 2006. The Buhari regime that is careless and failed to pretend to do one. No. And that can’t happen. If tried, the results will be a disaster. Just like the regime. Now the Tinubu regime is preparing the number of national heads. I bet that it also will not be able to give credible census before his term of office ended in 2027. By the way, he had put his thumb on the scale, so whatever census he did with the structure and personnel would now be controversial and the results will be full of enthusiasm and are justified in a debate.

Nigeria has 36 states and territory of the Federal Capital. Most of these countries operate based on six informal geopolitical zones, southwest, south south [in the southern part of the country]and northeast, northwest, and north center [in the northern part of the country]. This geopolitical zone is thin in law but is strong in the convention. As may be needed, the zone forms the basis for the appointment and allocation of resources from the central government when the state cannot be used. The committee has three members from the north and five members from the south. Still the story is incomplete and the figures are misleading. In the north only two geopolitical zones represented by northwestern and north north. Northeast, the Vice President Zone, Alhaji Mohammed Kashim Shettima, was eliminated. The true story is in the membership of the committee from the southern country. The five members came from the southwest, the territory of President Nigeria, Alhaji Tinubu. Southeast is not represented. South south excluded. If this imbalance is not the basis for challenging the census and refutes the results, then what is it? In many countries, the census results form a strong foundation for resource allocation. No less in our country. Then how do you justify the exception of the critical segment of the country from the membership of a high -level committee that will oversee the population and housing census? But the exception of several stakeholders has become the standard tariff of this country.

If we are a serious person, we must look back angry when we celebrate our 65th birthday tomorrow. We have disappointed ourselves. We have failed Africa.
