Oshiomhole kicked against honor for NEC Chair NEC Nwosu, giving a reason

Senator Adams Oshiomhole strongly objected to the recognition of Anumerta for the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, a former chairman of the National Election Commission who did not exist (NEC).

He argued that Nwosu failed the Nigerians by not officially declaring the winner of the presidential election on June 12, 1993.

Speaking during the senate debate on Thursday, Oshiomhole, who represented Edo North, held Nwosu and former military rulers Ibrahim Babangida who were responsible for deceiving millions of Nigerians who voted in what was considered the selection of Nigerians and the most fairer in Nigeria.

“Professor Nwosu and President Babangida fool 18 million Nigerians who voted,” Oshiomhole said. “If he was afraid of the gun because we were under dictatorship, some people might say, ‘Well, there are Nigerians who protest under the gun without taking care of the consequences.'”

Oshiomhole argues that Nwosu has many opportunities to correct, especially after Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, but he failed to do it.

“After the end of the term of office of Babangida, the death of Abiola, and the birth of a new democracy that produced President Obasanjo, I hope Nwosu said – both on his birthday or on a special event – ‘I could not state these numbers, but now, on my note, Abiola won this election. I could not announce it, but now, in my record.

“He died without recognition; he could not be appreciated,” Oshiomhole added, emphasizing that history should not be rewritten to celebrate someone who, in his view, failed to uphold the truth.

The debate emerged during deliberations on a motion sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), who tried to recognize the role of Nwosu in the transition of Nigerian democracy.

However, Oshiomhole stated that true courage will mean announcing Moshood Abiola’s victory despite risks, and because Nwosu did not do it, he did not deserve a national award.
