Victor Osimhen forged his deepest name in the history of Nigerian football on Tuesday night, becoming the first Nigerian to reach double figures in the UEFA Champions League.
The Super Eagles striker reached the decisive goal in Galatasaray’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool in Istanbul, quietly turning a penalty into the first half to take his account in the competition to 10 goals.

The stains kick occurred after Barış Alper Yılmaz was shot down in the box, with Osimhen sending Alisson Becker in the wrong way to turn on celebrations at the Türk Telekom stadium.
The historical strike not only assured the first three points of Galatasaray of the 2025/26 campaign, but also saw Osimhen overcome Obafemi Martins to become the top scorer of all Nigeria’s time in the competition of the main clubs in Europe.
Martins had scored nine goals in periods with Inter Milan, Wolfsburg and Rubin Kazan.
Although Osimhen’s night was interrupted in the 66th minute after stretching on a knee muscle, its impact had already been sealed. Surprisingly, the 25 -year -old just returned from a knee injury suffered in the international service, however, reached the occasion in a registered way.
The goal also underlined Osimhen’s unique place in Nigerian football folklore.
Now he is the first Nigerian to score for three different clubs in the Champions League, after having found the network with Lille and Napoli before opening his account with Galatasaray.
For Nigerian fans, the night had a feeling of pride, since few of the country’s players have left a brand so consistent in the largest stage in Europe.
Osimhen’s feats reaffirm their reputation as one of the most mortal modern strikers in Africa.
Liverpool, who dominated possession but fought with defensive lapses, saw his best opportunity against Cody Gakpo fall in the first half.
Ultimately, Osimhen’s decisive strike and Galatasaray’s implacable energy was sufficient to overthrow the premier league giants.
It was a night where history, ambition and national pride joined under the bright Istanbul lights.
