Ozekhome urges Tinubu to push for constitutional reforms

A Senior Nigerian Advocate, Mike Ozekhome, on Sunday tasked President Bola Tinubu with implementing a people-centric constitution for Nigeria.

The lawyer made the decision while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics show.

Ozekhome, who is a member of The Patriots, a distinguished group led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, recently met with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

When asked about the President’s commitment to constitutional reform, Ozekhome stressed the need for decisive action, saying, “He (Tinubu) must have the political will because these problems will not go away until we face them head on.”

He argued that a new constitution was vital to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including poverty, insecurity and corruption.

Asked if the new constitution was the antidote to poverty, insecurity and other challenges facing the Nigerian nation, Ozekhome said: “Yes. The killings you see, the poverty, the corruption, they are all symptoms of a bigger problem that is at the heart of what we are talking about. When you solve that, other things will fall into place.”

The lawyer criticized the current 1999 Constitution, describing it as a document imposed by the military and not subject to a referendum.

He called for a constitution centered on indigenous peoples and the people to redirect Nigeria’s direction, while emphasizing the need for nationhood and unity.

Ozekhome stressed that a new constitution should be put forward through a referendum and likened the current constitutional framework to a car with a broken engine that needed replacement rather than superficial repairs.
