Paris 2024: Former Super Falcons coach blames players for Brazil’s defeat

Former Super Falcons coach Rolandson Odey has suggested that the Nigerian women’s national team showed too much respect towards Brazil in their 1-0 defeat in the women’s football event at the Olympics.

Odey noted that despite the defeat, the Super Falcons did not perform badly.

As the team prepares for its next group game against world champions Spain, he stressed that the match could go either way.

“It’s not a bad thing; it’s just that we were careless in our attitude and display from the beginning, and Okeke was nervous,” Odey said.

“It wasn’t a bad game, though. We also had our own chances that we couldn’t take advantage of. I think we respected the Brazilians in the first half, which is why we paid dearly for it.”

He added: “It’s football, they haven’t discredited us. I watched the Spain-Japan game, it was 2-1. It’s a 50-50 game, forget about the world champion title.”

“All the Olympic teams came here to compete, not just participate. It’s a 50-50 game, we’ll see how it goes, but I haven’t given up hope on the Falcons team.”

The Super Falcons will now face world champions Spain in their second group match on Sunday, July 28.
