Passengers on a long-haul flight complained of an “unpleasant odor” after a body was left next to a heated kitchen.
British Airways flight BA32 was traveling from Hong Kong to Heathrow when a woman in her 60s suddenly died about an hour after takeoff. The situation was reportedly not considered an emergency by the pilots, who decided to continue to Heathrow.
Towards the end of the flight, some of the 331 passengers on board the Airbus A350-1000 reportedly began complaining about the smell after the body was dropped from a heated galley towards the rear of the plane.
“If a passenger is already dead, that is not considered an emergency,” a source told the Sun. “There was discussion about what to do with the body… with the cockpit’s request to lock it in a toilet rejected by the crew.”
The source said the flight crew had to “isolate” the body and wrap it in materials before moving it to the galley at the back of the plane.
“The galley had a heated floor, which some crew members had overlooked, and towards the end of the flight there was said to be a foul odor in that area,” the source said.
Police met the flight on arrival at Heathrow, where passengers were told to remain in their seats for around 45 minutes while investigations were carried out.
Since the crash, some flight crew members have been absent from work due to trauma, said the source, who praised the crew for their actions.
BA said previously that “all procedures were followed correctly”.
Deaths on flights are “rare,” according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013.
If such an accident occurs, the individual cannot be certified as dead unless there are qualified medical personnel on board.
International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines recommend following a “suggested” protocol in which a person is placed in a body bag and restrained in their seat or an empty seat.
It is also recommended to close the deceased person’s eyes and cover the body with a blanket “up to the neck” if the flight crew does not have a body bag available.
