In a dramatic shift that increasingly consolidated the clutches of the ruling party in the National Assembly, three senators serving from the state of the Kebbi officially defected from the Democratic Party (PDP) of the People to the Congress of All Progressive (APC) which quoted strategic alignments with their political goals.
Disabled MPs – Adamu Alaiero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) – convey their decisions in a separate letter addressed to the leadership of the Senate and read during the plenary session on Tuesday.
The one who led the session was the Vice President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), who announced the defector in front of the rooms that were seen divided.
The reading of the letters immediately threw a senate to a noisy and noisy state for more than fifteen minutes, reflecting a deep tension at the exit of the high profile of the opposition.
With the defector, APC now has 68 seats in the 10th senate, increasingly tightening its grip on the legislative power. The updated room composition is now standing as follows: APC – 68, PDP – 30, Labor Party – 5, NNPP – 2, SDP – 2, and APGA – 1.
This development was witnessed by prominent political figures, including the National Chairperson of APC, Abdullahi Ganduje; Member of the National Work Committee (NWC) and the Governor of the State Kebbi, Dr. Nasir Idris.
There was a loud song from the APC side of the room when the senators were disabled to the majority wings.

React to development, senate leaders, senator Openemi Bamidle (APC, Ekiti Central), describing defending as “the beauty of democracy,” stating that no one was forced to join the ruling party.
“These senators are experienced politicians. Nobody forced them. They joined us because they saw APC as a worthy platform to serve their constituents and contribute to national development,” said Bamidle.
He rejected Nigeria’s fear that hovering towards a party of one party, insisting that politics rearrangement is natural in developing democracy.
Also speaking, the Vice President of the Barau Jibrin Senate welcomed the lawmakers back to the APC fold, describing their return as going home.
“They returned to their roots. This is a member of the APC Foundation. This is not just a defender – it is a return to where they are,” he said.
Restrictions marked a significant setback for PDP in Kebbi states and in the Senate in general, because the party continues to grant with an internal division and reduced influence in the face of increasing APC dominance.
Political observers say this step can trigger further harmony ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially in countries where opposition parties struggle to maintain cohesion and relevance.
