People of Benin stage protest over alleged land grab by Governor Obaseki and disrespect towards the Oba of Benin
Youths took to the streets of Benin, the Edo State capital, to protest against what they described as injustice, land grabbing, unfair treatment and the erosion of the rich culture of the Kingdom of Benin.
Thousands of residents of Edo State took to the streets on Tuesday to express outrage over the alleged land grabbing and disrespect shown by Governor Godwin Obaseki towards the revered Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo.
The protesters, made up of community members and supporters of Benin’s monarch, condemned the governor’s actions, saying they undermined traditional institutions and violated ancestral lands.
Obaseki has challenged the Benin monarch on several occasions, including his attempt to divide the kingdom by creating the so-called traditional local government council in Edo South Senatorial District.
This conflict between the Benin monarch and Obaseki began after the latter failed to take possession of the Benin artifacts, which rightfully belonged to the Oba of Benin.
