Peseiro happy to End Super Eagles’ winless Streak – Latest Sports News In Nigeria
Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro expressed relief after his team ended their poor friendly match run with a 3-2 win against Mozambique.
Goals from Terem Moffi, Frank Onyeka and Moses Simon earned Nigeria victory over 10-man Mozambique in their friendly encounter in Portimäo on Monday.
The win was the first for the Super Eagles in a friendly match in 55 months, dating back to March 2019 when Paul Onuachu’s first minute goal accounted for the defeat of Egypt at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
On Monday, Mozambique Mambas took the lead within six minutes into the tie when Geny Catamo dragged the ball past goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
France-based striker Moffi equalized in 19th minute, and Onyeka doubled the advantage on the half hour.
The Super Eagles got a third goal when the irrepressible Moses Simon netted from the penalty spot in added time in the first period.
The Mambas registered their second goal through Faisal Bangal with 10 minutes into the closing half.
“I’m happy with the win because after 15 matches we didn’t win. Like 7 draws and 8 defeats against different teams like five years,” Peseiro said after the match.
“It was difficult, and we played against a very good team. We deserve more.”
“We played well, made good crosses, passes, managed the ball well and we finished the game very well. Our team is better than them.”
The Super Eagles will now focus on 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches starting in November as well as the 34th Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Cote d’Ivoire.
