Peseiro reveals the main headache of the Super Eagles team: I fixed it before I left

Former Nigeria senior national team coach Jose Peseiro says he solved the main problem that was troubling the Nigeria senior national team before he left his position as coach. Own goal Nigeria.com reports.

Peseiro left the team in February, a few weeks after leading the team to the final of the African Cup of Nations, where they lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast. It was Nigeria’s best result in the tournament since winning it in 2013.

He was replaced by his assistant Finidi George but was later sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after poor performances in the World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and Benin Republic respectively.

Nigeria held South Africa to a 1-1 draw before suffering a 1-2 defeat to Benin Republic, dropping further down their group in the World Cup qualifiers as they now sit 5th in the 6-team group.

Reflecting on his experience, the Portuguese said he encountered a major problem on the pitch when he took over as coach of the Super Eagles but he resolved it before his contract expired at the end of the Africa Cup of Nations.

“When I took over the team, goalkeepers were a big problem in Nigeria. I kept faith with the ones I met, but I noticed their confidence was low when they played for us. I went out and got a new goalkeeper (Stanley Nwabali) and made him the first choice at the Africa Cup of Nations. The biggest stage, but his performance proved me right. That solved the problem I had,” he said.

Goodbye Emmanuel
