In the midst of increasing speculation regarding the potential change in Nigerian political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election, Yunusa Tanko, a national coordinator while the Obidient movement throughout the world, has stressed that Peter Obi remains a member of the Labor Party (LP), at least for now.
Tanko, who was a prominent spokesman during the OBI 2023 President’s campaign, discussed rumors that spin -spinning on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday. Responding to the claim that Obi was in talks to defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Tanko stated firmly, “As far as I know, His Majesty, Peter Obi, is a member of the Labor Party. Still so until when there are other things that might arise.”
Clarification following the comments made by the Presidential Candidate of SDP 2023, Adewole Adebayo, who has just accused that Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have begun talks to join SDP. Before Adebayo’s statement, SDP National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, also claimed that Obi’s allies lobbyed the party to anticipate the next election.
Tanko, however, rejected the reports, emphasized that the leadership of the Labor Party would immediately provide clarity about internal problems. He specifically pointed out to the development of the new law, including the Supreme Court’s decision which canceled the leadership of Julius Abure as the Chairperson of the National LP.

“There will be a meeting, maybe in a week, by party leaders to clarify the basic position for everyone,” Tanko said. “This will be in line with the Supreme Court’s decision and hopefully will make the remaining uncertainty to rest.”
The uncertainty about the future of Obi’s politics is taking place against the background of the renewable opposition momentum. On March 2025, Obi joined Atiku Abubakar, former Governor of the State of Kaduna Nasir El-Rufai, and others in announcing a broad coalition aimed at shifting the President of Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the Congress of All Progressive (APC). The coalition seeks to take advantage of the combined political capital of Obi and Atiku, which collectively surveyed more than 12 million votes in the 2023 election, significantly more than the winners stated, Tinubu.
When political tension boils, SDP seems to emerge as a potential neutral foundation for politicians who are disappointed with internal disputes in PDP and LP, or those who are ruled out in the ruling APC. The attractiveness of SDP lies in the stability of the relative organizational and increased strategic interests as a unifying platform that is possible for the strength of the opposition.
However, a fixed question about the durability of each coalition built on different ideologies and individual political ambitions. For now, Tanko’s comments underline the wishes of the Labor Party to survive when the country’s political rearrangement began to form. Whether Peter Obi remains the face of the LP or appears as a prominent figure in the new political alliance may depend on the results of the future party decisions.
