Monrovia, Liberia, April 25, 2025 – The Liberia Pharmacy Board has shut down Willmatt and Son Medicine Store in Foya, Lofa County, for operating illegally and carrying out clinical practices and surgical procedures, leading to health complications for patients.

Addressing a news conference Thursday in Monrovia, LPB Registrar General, Dr. Menmon P. Z. Dunah, said investigation found Willmatt and Son Medicine Store operating without license, something, he said jeopardizes the health sector.

According to Dr. Dunah, Willmatt and Son Medicine operation has been revoked, following a tipoff, when health controversy sparked in Foya, after a patient relapsed, following unethical surgical procedures at the drug store.

“We stand high against medical malpractice and as such, we have revoked the license of the Willmatt and Son Medicine Store in Foya, Lofa, following wrongful procedure and unethical standard”, he says.

“As regulatory body of pharmacies in Liberia, and in accordance with section 67.25, licensed establishments limited to dispensing drugs, medicines and sundries, of the Pharmacy ACT of Liberia, we have shut down the facility.”

He explains that Willmatt and Son Medicine was shut down after investigation found them carrying out unauthorized medical procedure and being in possession of restricted pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Dunah further laments that the premise contained a large quantity of injectables, unlicensed medical and surgical supplies that are used for clinical and surgical procedures and possession of expired medical products.

He says Willmatt and Son Medicine Store Proprietor, Mr. Mathias Sakila, was caught performing surgical operation on a young woman (name withheld) at the medicine store, leading to severe health complications for which she was taken to Telleweyon Hospital in Voinjama, Lofa, for proper treatment.

Dunah, emphasized the need to enforce regulations saying, “We will swoop on unlicensed facilities, peddlers, and those who engaged in illegal acts. Our inspectorate division men are ready and committed to enforcing laws and will continue to take action against pharmacies that do not comply.”

Meanwhile, the latest move by the Liberia Pharmacy Board, according to Dr. Dunah, is to bring sanity to pharmaceuticals across the country and to help improve the health sector and promote safety of citizens. Editing by Jonathan Browne
