Plateau Assembly approves N5.8 billion for LG elections

The Plateau Provincial People’s Representative Council (DPRD) has given the green light for a budget of IDR 5.8 trillion to facilitate the holding of simultaneous regional head elections (Pilkada) in 2024.

Thursday’s approval follows a request from Governor Caleb Mutfwang, presented to the House by House Speaker Gabriel Dewan, who highlighted the absence of budget allocations for elections in the 2024 budget.

Initially, Governor Mutfwang had sought approval of N5.7 billion as a supplementary budget for 2024. However, after a thorough review, legislators increased the amount to N5.8 billion.

Key Highlights of the Approval Process:

– Increase in Security Allocation: The approved amount includes an upward revision of the security allocation from N2.7 million to N4.2 million.
– Legislators’ Input: Honorable Kalamu Dal proposed a budget review, while Honorable Daniel Nanbol advocated for critical review and consideration.
– PLASIEC’s Role: As the electoral body responsible for conducting credible local government elections, PLASIEC will utilize the approved funds to ensure the smooth running of the election process.

With this approval, PLASIEC can now proceed with its preparations for the October 9 polls, ensuring that the electoral process is free, fair and credible.
