The Plateau State government said on Thursday at least 200 students were trapped in a collapsed school in Busa Buji, Jos North Local Government Area of โโthe state.
An undisclosed number of students and teachers were feared killed when a two-storey school building collapsed at Saints Academy in the area on Friday morning.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the building collapsed at 8:30 a.m. when many students and teachers were already in class to take final exams.
State Information and Communication Commissioner Musa Ashoms, who disclosed this to reporters, said many of the trapped students were rescued by emergency responders.
He added that the school has a population of 400 students.
The commissioner noted that the building was not up to standard and warned schools with similar buildings to close down.

Ashoms said: โFrom what we gathered because it was an emergency, around 200 people were trapped in the collapsed building.
“Emergency interventions have helped a lot, and many children have been evacuated to hospitals. And we pray that in the end, things will end like this, with no lives lost.
โEfforts have been made by NEMA, SEMA and other security agencies to ensure that we find them alive and take them to the hospital.
“And so far, we’ve got a few of them. We’re thankful there were no tests today. The number of victims must be more than this.
โFor the school, you can see that the school is on the riverbank and, from your eye observation, you know that the building is not very sturdy.
โWe urge other schools that are not following the plan that have similar issues to close in the interest of the state and the interest of our people.โ
