Police and KPK resolve dispute over 10,000 new recruits

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and the Police Service Commission (PSC) yesterday resolved their differences over 10,000 newly recruited police officers.

Police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, noted that the police had finally received the list of recruits.

Police have previously rejected allegations that the process was marred by corruption.

Adejobi also confirmed the PSC’s statement on Monday that training of the recruits would begin on August 10.

Recall that the NPF in June rejected a list of 10,000 recruits released by the PSC under its previous chairman, Solomon Arase.

Police suspect a number of qualified candidates have been replaced with ineligible ones and are demanding the cancellation of the entire process.

However, the PSC denied the allegations and firmly rejected the request for cancellation.

This impasse prompted the Minister of Police, Ibrahim Gaidam, and other stakeholders to step in to address the issue.

On Monday, in a statement by its spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC announced that training of the recruits would begin on August 10.

Police spokesman Adejobi, in his own statement on Tuesday, quoted the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as confirming that the police and the PSC were now on the same page regarding the 10,000 recruits.

Adejobi said the police and PSC reached the agreement after lengthy deliberations.

He said: “The Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission have finally reached an agreement on the final merit list for the recruitment of police officers into the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Inspector-General of Police expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the agreement on the final merit list was a testament to the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission to work together in the best interest of the country.

“In light of this development, the training of the newly recruited officers is scheduled to commence on Saturday, August 10, 2024. The training programme will be intensive and designed to equip the recruits with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their duties effectively and uphold the core values of the Nigeria Police Force.

“As directed by the Chief of Police, the training participants will be educated in modern police ethics and principles, community policing strategies, ICT, artificial intelligence, human relations, attitude and behavior change, etc.

“The Inspector General of Police would like to thank all stakeholders and the general public for their patience and support throughout this process.”
