The Nigerian Police National Cybercrime Centre has arrested 16 suspects in connection with a financial fraud involving Interswitch Limited, a major African digital trading platform, and has recovered cash and property worth N3.9 billion from the suspects, with efforts ongoing to recover additional funds.
In a joint press conference on Monday in Abuja, Department of State Services (DSS) spokesperson Peter Afunanya outlined the policeβs achievements. He explained that the arrests and seizures followed a petition from Interswitch Limited over a malfunction in its financial portal.
Afunanya noted that eight suspects have been convicted, saying, βThe National Cybercrime Centre of the Nigeria Police was engaged in a major financial fraud case, following a petition from Interswitch Limited regarding the disruption of its financial portal. The swift response resulted in the arrest of over 16 suspects, eight of whom have been convicted. The operation resulted in the recovery of over 3.9 billion naira in cash, properties and vehicles, with efforts ongoing to recover additional looted funds.β
In another operation, police in Taraba State arrested a notorious kidnapper, seizing three AK-47 rifles, four magazines, 19 live ammunition, 23 spent ammunition and five solar panels from his property.

Afunanya also reported that Lagos State commandos foiled a kidnap attempt on July 4, 2024, killing nine kidnappers and recovering important weapons including four AK-47 rifles, four locally made semi-automatic pistols, nine AK-47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, a POS machine, a loudspeaker and two operational vehicles. Investigation is ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects.
Also, on April 24, 2024, police rescued 18-year-old Mallam Adamu Adamu from custody in Kasda, Jakusko Special Administrative Area, Yobe State. During the raid, three suspects were arrested and two AK-47 rifles and a magazine containing 26 live rounds were seized. The suspects will face charges after investigation is complete.
