Police arrest 4 over alleged murder of Kogi student

Police officers in Kogi have arrested four people in connection with the murder of a Federal University Lokoja (FUL) student.

The victim, a 17-year-old Level 100 student from FUL’s Biology Department was allegedly kidnapped and murdered by a 21-year-old man.

Spokesperson of the state police command, Williams Ovye-Aya, disclosed this to journalists on Friday in Lokoja.

He said the main suspect allegedly conspired with three friends to commit the crime.

The spokesman said: “Operators of the Nigeria Police Force, attached to the State Intelligence Department (SID), Kogi Command, on September 11 arrested one Jeremiah Paul-Awe of Chikun Local Government of Kaduna State.

“Paul-Awe is the person responsible for the kidnapping and murder of the victim.

“We received a complaint from Stephen Oluwoyo that his daughter was missing and he could not contact her.

“Her father also said that he received a message from an unknown number that his daughter had been kidnapped and the kidnapper was asking for a ransom.

“Officers acted immediately on actionable intelligence with the assistance of the Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU) from Police Headquarters, tailing and arresting the suspect, Paul Awe on September 11 in connection with the crime.

“When interrogated, the suspect admitted to kidnapping and killing the victim on September 4 at around 20.30 WIB.

“He further admitted that he added drugs to the victim’s food and strangled her.

“He mutilated the body by removing the eyes, lungs, liver, tongue, intestines and other parts and then dumped the body in the bushes.

“The suspect also revealed that immediately after he killed his victim, he called the victim’s father and demanded a ransom so that he could fulfill the ritual requirements of a local doctor he met on TikTok.

“The victim’s father, who did not know about his son’s death, sent a ransom of Rp. 400,000 to the suspect so that his son would be released.

“After Paul-Awe’s arrest on September 11, he led an operative team to the scene of the crime where his body was recovered, evacuated and deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja morgue for autopsy.

“Further investigation resulted in the arrest of three other suspects.

“The main suspect revealed that two of the three suspects were his friends.”

Ovye-Aya said the four suspects would be arraigned in court at the conclusion of the investigation.
