As preparations for the Edo State governorship election heat up, the Nigerian Police have announced the arrest of two suspected political thugs during overnight raids at several locations across the state.
Police Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who made the announcement in a statement posted on his X account on Saturday morning, said the raids were aimed at preventing election violence, before and after the polls.
The statement titled “Edo General Election: Police arrest political thugs, seize firearms in overnight raids, vow to tackle illegal gun carriers and troublemakers”, read:
‘The Nigerian Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb election violence in Edo State with the arrest of two political hoodlums, namely: Edwin Obanor, aged 43 and Audu Tajudeen, a 41-year-old PDP member of Ugbogbo area, Igara Akoko, Edo.
“The suspects were arrested in separate incidents. Obanor, believed to be the leader of the armed group, was arrested at about 9pm in Oredo Ward 4, while Tajudeen, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member from Ugbogbo Quarters, Igara Akoko, was arrested in Igara Akoko area.
“The police, acting on information about plans to instigate violence during the elections, recovered three locally made pistols from Obanor and one locally made gun from Tajudeen.

“This is a significant breakthrough in our efforts to curb election violence,” Adejobi said.
He further highlighted the police’s continued commitment to maintaining peace and order during the gubernatorial election, stressing that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are fully prepared to prevent any form of violence or disruption during the election.
“The Nigerian Police Force will not tolerate any form of violence or disruption during the elections in Edo State,” he added.
Adejobi also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police through the established helplines, reiterating the police’s dedication to protecting lives and property.
