The Delta State High Court, sitting in Asaba, has sentenced Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Delta State Police Command to death for murder. The court presided over by Justice CD Diai on Tuesday convicted and sentenced Ebiri to death for killing a phone dealer, Onyeka Ibeh, in AsabaIbeh, a popular phone dealer from Asaba, was shot dead on April 5 2023, at a police checkpoint along Ugbolu Road in front of his pregnant wife. The couple was stopped by the police team for a search. The deceased was waiting in his car to be treated, but when officers were not available he decided to drive away. The police inspector immediately opened fire in the vehicle and the bullet hit the deceased Ibeh on the head. Unfortunately he died instantly. The killing of the telephone trafficker sparked protests by young people along the streets of Asaba and in front of the police station demanding justice. The prosecution, led by a Director of the Ministry of Justice, EH Edema, revealed that the accused was part of a police patrol team that organized a stop and search exercise on April 5, 2023, along Ugbolu Asaba Road in the state capital. Speaking to reporters after the sentencing, Edema said; “Today’s sentence is a historic sentence because in this case justice was done for the deceased and for society in general.” The elder brother of the deceased, Ifeanyi Ibeh, who attended the sentencing, also commended the court for bringing justice to his family.
