Police kill kidnapper, arrest three others in Delta

The Delta State Police Command on Wednesday killed a suspected kidnapper during a gun duel in a Delta community.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued in Warri.

Edafe noted that the operation, which also resulted in the arrest of three other suspects, resulted in the seizure of a number of lethal weapons.

He stated that the incident occurred on August 12, 2024, when the CP Special Task Force based in Ughelli was conducting an investigation into the previously arrested suspect, Joel Ofoye.

The investigation led them to Ewu community in Ughelli South LGA, in pursuit of a notorious arms dealer who was supplying weapons to a kidnapping syndicate.

“While the officers were in pursuit, they came under heavy attack by members of the suspect’s gang, who attempted to free Joel Ochuko,” the statement said.

However, the police forced the criminals to flee during a shootout.

The statement confirmed that the injured suspect was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Ughelli, but died of his injuries while receiving treatment.

A number of firearms, including a Beretta pistol with four live bullets, a pump-action shotgun with nine bullets, and a locally assembled revolver, were confiscated from the gang.
