Police officers blackmail passengers over suspended ECMR (video)

A naughty Nigerian police officer has been arrested in a video that blackmails the driver over the electronic center motor registry that is now suspended (ECMR).

In the incident that occurred in the state of Edo, the police were seen demanding ₦ 5,000 or five liters of fuel from the driver for failing to provide ECMR evidence.

Police Inspector General, Kayode Egbetokun, in July 2024 suspected the enforcement of ECMR registration for vehicle owners in the country after public protests from Nigeria.

In the video recorded by X Teniola users with the grip of @teeniiola, officers faced a group of travelers along Benin bypass and asked ECMR.

When they failed to give documents, he boldly told them to give him five liters of fuel or pay N5,000.

“A moment between a police officer and a traveler who does not have an ECMR – who has been deferred by IGP. Officers asked them to pay ₦ 5,000 or buy 5 liters of fuel, along Benin Bypass,” Teeniiola wrote on platform X together with video.

In the video, one of the passengers firmly told officers that demanding ECMR enforcement was illegal with the police who responded:

“You can call now.”

When passengers refuse to call anyone and ask instead:

“What do you want us to do?”

Officers demand five liters of fuel, which states:

“We will go and buy it, it’s 5K.”

“You want 5K from us, Abi?” The tourist asked, when the police were seen telling other travelers to carry three liters of fuel.

This video has caused a variety of reactions from Nigerian people who are surprised in a impudent and shameless way of the police committing extortion despite a repeated warning of the police hierarchy.

Spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, SP Edafe Bright, who reacts to the video under Teeniiola’s post, condemns the officers’ actions and swear that he will be arrested and handled

“Oh my God. Thank you for recording this. Little by little, all moles will be expelled from the system.

“All of these police are embarrassing to us, one by one, they will be sent out of the organization. Maybe when they become unemployed, they will enter the content making. This is embarrassing and strength is above it,” he wrote.
