Police reject reports of attack on Owerri correctional centre

The Imo state police command has dismissed reports of an attack on the Owerri Correctional Centre by gunmen.

The command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, made the clarification in a statement on Wednesday in Owerri.

He was reacting to reports from an online platform that criminals attacked the facility on Wednesday.

The spokesman described the reports as false and misleading.

Okoye said: “The Command wishes to state clearly that the publication is completely false, misleading and malicious.

“The publication is a deliberate attempt by the perpetrators of the crime to create unnecessary fear and anxiety in the minds of the Imo people.

“We wish to inform the people of Imo that security forces have been deployed extensively throughout the country, including correctional facilities, to prevent any form of threat of attack.”

He also denied the alleged video of the raid on the dormitory at Imo State University (IMSU) by security personnel.

He warned students not to take part in planned nationwide protests in the country.

“A thorough investigation of the video revealed that nothing of the sort happened in IMSU hostel or anywhere else in the state.

“The Command is committed to protecting the rights of peaceful protesters but warns against any violent demonstrations that could result in destruction of lives and property in the state.

“Hence, a thorough investigation has been initiated to arrest the spreaders of the misleading publication as well as the video,” the spokesperson added.
