Police warn Nigerians of planned nationwide cult initiation
Police have raised the alarm over a possible mass initiation into a secret sect across the country. The spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, made the announcement in a statement on Saturday, July 6.
In a statement titled, βNeo-Black Movement, Also Known as Aiye or Black Axe, Planned Cult Celebration,β Iringe-Koko alerted the public to the alleged cult groupβs planned Founderβs Day mass celebration believed to be scheduled for Sunday, July 7. βThe event, codenamed AIYE Day or 7/7, is set to be observed in all states of the federation, especially in institutions of higher learning.
The Command is aware of the history of the Neo-Black movement, which is infamous for campus murders, cult clashes, and excessively violent conduct, among other criminal acts. We estimate that the annual AIYE DAY celebration will likely be held in the cult group’s hideouts and strongholds, especially on university campuses across the country.
Furthermore, the ceremony could likely provide opportunities for anti-cult activities, inter-cult violence and other associated violent crimes in and around tertiary institutions in Rivers State.β

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP PLANNED BY THE NEO BLACK MOVEMENT, AKA AIYE OR BLACK AXE
The Rivers State Police Command has received information about a national celebration of the Neo-Black Movement (NBM) scheduled for July 7, 2024. The fraternity, also known as Aiye or Black Axe, intends to organize this event as a commemoration of Founder’s Day.
The event, codenamed AIYE Day or 7/7, is set to be observed in all states of the federation, especially in institutions of higher learning. The Command is aware of the antecedents of the Neo-Black movement, known for campus murders, cult clashes, and excessively violent conduct, among other criminal acts. We estimate that the annual AIYE DAY celebration will likely be held in the cult groupβs hideouts and strongholds, especially in university campuses across the country.
Furthermore, the ceremony could likely provide opportunities for anti-cult activities, inter-cult violence and other associated violent crimes in and around tertiary institutions in Rivers State. It could also provide ample opportunities for forced initiation of innocent victims and other acts such as rape and armed robbery. Accordingly, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Rilwan Disu psc, has directed all Area Commanders, DPOs and tactical team commanders to carry out preventive and response raids on all identified cult hideouts, black spots and hotels that could be used as meeting points by cult leaders, to ensure that the planned AIYE DAY celebration does not take place within their AORS and that suspected cult members are arrested and brought to account. Area Commanders, DPOs and Tactical Team Commanders must implement visible and effective patrol strategies with close monitoring of all HEI campuses and public places throughout their AORS to intercept cult members and frustrate their purpose. HEIs are advised to increase security measures and maintain strict supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
Educators and school administrators should be alert to unusual student gatherings or activities in their schools. Parents and guardians should monitor their children and wards closely during this time and look for warning signs in the content of their interactions with friends. Community leaders are advised to be aware of possible unusual gatherings or activities in their area.
They and local security teams should work together and remain vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity to the nearest police station. Religious leaders should lecture their followers on the evil of secret worship. The Command remains determined in fulfilling our duty to maintain law and order while protecting lives and property. We will not give up in decisively dealing with any person or group intent on disturbing the peace we have worked diligently for.
